TEACH SOMETHING & Stand Out from The Crowd

Together with a group of American food bloggers, photographers, and content creators we are testing new food video styles and productions, led by Brooke Lark.

This week Brooke suggested to take this opportunity to build our video personality:

"CURATE YOUR CHARACTER. Part of building a video channel people want to consistently tune into is BUILDING A CHANNEL WITH PERSONALITY."

We had to think about 1 or 2 cues that will differentiate us from others and introduced them into our videos.

Can you guess what my cues are?

Teach them to cook before they leave

My son Liam is leaving for college in September and I want him to learn how to cook.

We will be cooking Romanesco Pasta with Sausage and you can find the recipe on my blog:

In terms of look 

I will wear glasses as I am allergic to makeup and max a lips gloss.

As something unusual, I will have a red neckless made with 19th century Venitian Verrine Glass, but I am sure only few will notice that.

No other jewelry just the watch and the wedding band.

Week 2: Teach Something & Stand Out from The Crowd

I will have my hair up, first of all, because I always tie my hair back when I cook for a hygienic reason.

Also because I am going natural grey but I am only halfway there.

My hair dye was starting to become a nuisance.

I had to start dyeing my hair in my 20s and now in my 50s it was getting time-consuming. 

Lately, I had to dye my hair every second week as my roots will start to show so soon.

White roots are so untidy, I couldn't stand it.

I came across Lyn Slater from Accidental Icon from my friend Elaine Benoit's Podcast Maturepreneurial and for me, she was revealing as well as inspirational.

Aging is not about how you look but how you embrace it, so I decided to enjoy my grey hair and stop dyeing them.

Trademark Style

As a regular signature mark in my videos, I will have a brief short introduction followed by a door opening over a panoramic outdoor view of the region, something linked to the recipe.

In this video, I am showing a Romanesco vegetable with a panoramic view of the hills and forest covered with snow.

There is a subtle connection here between the snow and the Romanesco.

Both the Romanesco florets and the snowflakes are natural fractals.

For the Pan view, I am not using any special photography equipment, and you might notice it is a bit shaky.

Brooke invited John Fulton into our facebook group to talk to us about Film productions and answer some questions.

For those of us who are not professional photographers and do not have a Gimbal (amazon affiliate link), he suggested using toys on wheels and Premier pro Stabilizer to make our moving scenes.

So that is what I did, not perfect but need more practice.

So, that was week 2 and week 3 challenge will be disclosed today.

  • I almost doubled my YouTube subscribers, starting from 45 I have now 85 subscribers on my channel.

    Stupendous video, Laura! I love it! It’s great to teach the kids how to cook so that they don’t live on junk food!

      Thank you Beth, I agree. Plus when they are used to eat well they will be looking for our recipes later…you know!!

    Love this video! Too often kids now-a-days don’t know how to cook, especially before they go to college! It’s such a handy talent to know! I think you look great! We don’t need dyes and make-up to look good! Love your channel Laura!
